This is an ongoing collection of skills, ideas and inspirations to help wild aliveness flourish; in our lives and the land.
My name is Miles. I live on what is now called Vancouver Island, Coast Salish territory, in a cabin that i built with some friends using scavenged materials. We collect rainwater in old barrels, live without electricity, and spend much of our time learning new/ancient ways of existing – becoming creatures, going feral.
Feel free to holler at me, any supportive words are appreciated and encourage me to keep on putting posts up here; you can also support to the cause buy visiting the donate page.

Hi there, I’ll be following your blog with interest – your situation sounds tough but idyllic; a rawness that we need to return to.
Good luck with everything, and keep writing.

Hey, good to meet you at Porcupine Palace, even if we didn’t talk much. It would be awesome to get up to BC sometime and check out what you’ve got going on.

How did you come to live in a cabin on Vancouver Island? Do you own the land you live on? Is is government land? Are you living ‘unnoticed’ on land that a person or company has a paper deed? Where do you find electricity/internet to post on this website? Do you use the internet at a public library or coffee shop? If so, how do you have the money to pay for these services? Are you an heir? Did you save up? Do you have a non-feral side job or get paypal donations? How do you commute to electricity services? car? bike? Do you have health insurance? Do you have a ‘regular house’ that you visit or a parents house you go to to get a hot shower or a fix of twinkies every once in a while? ‘Going feral’ does likely require some level of interaction with modern ‘money’ or ‘permissions’. What is your interaction? These are straight up questions. I greatly appreciate your go feral blog and your posting of interesting information. I hope you don’t mind me asking financial questions, some people get wiggly over it — they’ll post on their blogs all about the intricacies of their sex life, religious life, feral life, political life, but clam up on simple questions on financial life. Can you give a straight up response?

Hi Diana, haha, that is a lot of questions, for sure I am pretty vague about myself with this blog, but I’ll satisfy some of your curiousities….
I live on someone’s land that does not ask for rent, but just appreciates having a few good folks around to caretake their ‘property’.
I have a laptop, I charge it and use internet at libraries, homes of friends/family, and other public spaces.
I usually work for one month out of the year, the money I make from that and from selling some wild crafts is more than enough for me to make random expenditures during the other eleven months.
I am not an heir, not living off of any kind of inheritance, or large amount of savings even. I am pretty frugal, but have never really worked enough to amass significant savings.
I Bike, hitch, walk, or occasionally borrow a friend’s truck if there is something that calls for it.
I don’t have a ‘regular house’ i visit. If I am at someone’s house that has a shower, occasionally I will use it, or wash my clothes, but none of us really depend on any other house to support us.
People don’t need health insurance in Canada, basic health care is ‘free’.
So, basically, I work a bit, don’t pay rent or buy very much food, but still use money for things here and there. I take advantage of other people’s internet, warm running water etc. from time to time, but don’t heavily rely on such things.
Was that straight up? Thanks for the questions, that was kinda fun.

Feral,
Thanks was totally straight up. Thanks! I have
met a few USA feral people; they are typically young and still on their parents health insurance, have ex-military health insurance, or ‘rich’ and use their inheritance/trust money to buy private health insurance as wells as to buy things they need here and there. A scattered bunch are students and have student health insurance and just inrentially miss all their classes. A subgroup have no health insurance and some are dead now. I am a nonferal corporate animal, for the
health insurance, looking for a mail order option to marry myself off to a Canadian. Just kidding. I’d choose a Mexican. Just kidding… Thanks again for your honest reseponse.

I just came across your blog by chance while searching info on tar sands oil. I am very environmental and share with you the ideas you present here on your way of life. The Native Americans had it right. I am a little squeamish, so the gutting of animals and the bone marrow thing kinda grossed me out, even though since I was little I wanted to be like Grizzly Adams when I grew up and live in the forest. I don’t think I could kill anything with a face. Anyway, I was just wondering if you are on Twitter at all. I have shared some of your blog on there and would like to connect there with you to share info. I do not have a blog as of yet, but I subscribed to yours.
Thanks for your blog

Good man, Ive just about had it, nearing 40, still in good shape, dont get any of posh consumerism that is about in cities these days, and I feel trapped and climbing walls in suburbia (cos you gotta be posh to afford some space and time). So far Im just hiking more and more, staying in the woods, and recharching, but the way I see it, Im already out, spending days in apartment is just meaningless.
