Here is some reading that might help inform and fill in gaps with regards to where the content here is coming from. The skills and ideas presented here are not meant to be simply hobbies or entertainment - they are meant to help those on the journey towards living in balance with this earth, living neither as slaves or slavemasters, working towards healing the land and our communities from the (ongoing) trauma of this culture. Expect this list to expand…

Radical Sustainability:

-The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race – Jared Diamond          ”Hunter-gatherers practiced the most successful and longest-lasting life style in human history. In contrast, we’re still struggling with the mess into which agriculture has tumbled us, and it’s unclear whether we can solve it.”

-The Primitivist Critique of Civilization – Richard Heinberg

- Against the grain (book) – Richard Manning

The Earth’s Blanket (book) - Nancy Turner

-Is sustainable agriculture an oxymoron? Toby Hemenway

Ancestral/Country Skills:

Paleoplanet.net – comprehensive forum on primitive skills. One can learn lots from this site, but don’t expect to be inspired by all of the folks that contibute to it.

- Braintan.com – amazing resource for tanning information.

- The Society of Primitive Technology – these folks put out a bi-annual zine, some of the contributors are racist fools, some are brilliant.

- Mother Earth News – this magazine is pretty cheezy nowadays, but all of their old back issues are available free online, and in the 70′s/early 80′s the magazine was filled with really useful information to help poor people figure out how to live in the woods. Great resource.

Northwest Coast:

Daughters of Copper Woman (book), Anne Cameron – I cannot reccomend this book highly enough. Creation stories and tales of indigenous resistance to colonization from the wise old Nuu-chah-nulth women of what is now called Vancouver island. This book reminds us of a beauty most have not touched in this lifetime.

- Cedar: tree of life for northwest coast first people, and all other books by Hilary Stewart, cover day to day living skills of the original cultures here, excellent.

De-Colonization :

- Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (book), Dee Brown – if you haven’t read this, you better. A history of the wars, massacres, and displacement of the plains Indians. Absolutely a must read for every person living on this stolen continent.

- The Native Youth Movement – check it.

- Endgame, Welcome to the Machine (and many other books) – Derrick Jensen

- Woman and Nature – Susan Griffith – A beautiful, harsh critique of patriarchy, domestication, and science in amazing poetry.

Sexuality :

- Sister Zeuscomprehensive resource for women’s sexual health. Good sections on herbal abortion (particularly the detailed personal experiences), not as great info on tracking fertility.

- Figleaf’s Real Adult Sex“sex is a serious issue that’s seriously messed up” – this site is rad, lots of awesome links from it.

Health / Nutrition :

- The Weston A .Price Foundation - Validating traditional diets through modern research. This site has lots to offer in understanding what/how our ancestors ate, and why we need to eat that way if we want to be healthy. I am not huge on their promotion of dairy, grains and agiculture in general, but take it for what it’s worth (which in this case is a lot!).

- Nourishing Traditions (book) – Sally Fallon – pretty much the WAPF’s manifesto, really great.

Other/Homies:

- Healing The Earth – great radio show out of Guelph, Ontario. Lots of brilliant interviews to check out!

-Urban Scout - friend and rewilding mascot, always controversial.

-Food Grows as Words Flow – my friend Ben writes some really beautiful things.
